Information about Cuyahoga Community College agricultural science, registering for elective courses, and taking tests for free online. Engineering is one of the fastest-growing job areas, and for good reason. As the consumer electronics industry expands, engineers are increasingly in demand. If you complete the agricultural science program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as crop and soil science, agribusiness, or hydroponic production methods. Further, due to advances in agricultural science, there is a growing shortage of biotech graduates, and of skilled agricultural engineers in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Cuyahoga Community College.

Agricultural biotechnology, and crop science in general, includes traditional cross-breeding techniques, trait selection, and genetic engineering in some cases. Biotech crops can make farming more profitable by increasing crop quality and may in some cases increase crop yields. According to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), biotechnology crops as a percentage of total crop plantings in the USA were about 88 percent for corn, 94 percent for cotton, and 93 percent for soybeans. Herbicide-tolerant crops are particularly compatible with commercial agriculture systems that help preserve topsoil from erosion.

USDA researchers seek to solve major agricultural problems and to better understand the basic plant biology relating to agricultural science. This includes introducing new or improved traits in plants, animals, and microorganisms and creating new biotechnology-based products such as more effective diagnostic tests, improved farm animal vaccines, and better antibiotics. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts research on the economic aspects of the use of genetically engineered plants, including the rate of adoption of biotechnology by farmers.

Environmental Protection Agency

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of the principal agencies that work with environmental engineers to protect and improve air, water, and overall environmental quality. Keeping communities safe and healthy requires action to reduce risks associated with exposure to chemicals in industry and the environment, such as controlling the introduction and use of new pesticides.

The EPA reduces radon risks, identifies health risks in schools and homes, and aims to improve chemical management practices. Oversight of chemical storage and manufacturing is a principal focus of attention, as well as efforts to combat air toxins. The EPA also tracks hazardous waste, and protects drinking water from contaminants that endanger public health.

Engineering Job Listings

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.
